Some say you should spend one months' salary on an engagement ring, others perhaps two or maybe even three. Over the years these ring/budget equations have come to be regarded as a tradition but why?
The short answer is by great marketing. In the 1930’s DeBeers started a marketing campaign that suggested the perfect diamond engagement ring spend was a month’s salary, by the 1980’s it was up to two months salary!...can you see where they are going with this? They also came up with some great slogans like “A Diamond is Forever” and “How can you make two months salary last forever?” They basically invented a tradition and it worked. But that’s not to say there claims don’t warrant merit.
Diamonds do last 'forever'; they are already millions of years old before they are placed in an engagement ring. No other gemstone can take the kind of daily abuse an engagement ring gets. A diamond never ages, scratches or dulls and just needs cleaning to restore it to the original beauty of the day you first seen it. Bridal jewellery becomes a family heirloom so will be passed down from generation to generation and of all the things you spend on your engagement and wedding your rings are the only items you will use everyday for the rest of your life.
The average engagement ring spend in the UK is around £1,500 so roughly one months salary. In the US its closer to two months and in Japan it an eye-watering three months! So it depends on where you live and what you earn if you want use the ring/budget equation as a gauge.
Whatever you decide to spend, if you've found the right partner, will be the correct amount but this is your chance to show them how things are going to be in the future and remember if you choose to scrimp now they may come back to you for an upgrade in 15 years time when your salary is much higher and so will their expectations.
My advice is to spend as much as you can now as you are only going to do this once and the sense of joy and pride you will fell when you see it on their finger is priceless.
Confidently yours, Alexander
